In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the operating system scans the wireless spectrum every 45 seconds to look for a more preferred wireless access point (AP) than the current one. According to MSDN, the wireless driver must not perform any scans while data is being streamed. Unfortunately, these scans cause streaming data including online games, Youtube videos, and internet radio stations to be interrupted as frequently as every 45 seconds.

Even though wireless autoconfig for preferred AP causes problems for many users, Microsoft will not remove this feature from the default OS configuration. Unfortunately, disabling wireless autoconfig also stops all wireless connections immediately.

Some typical games that are negatively affected by wireless lag include World of Warcraft, Battleforge, and Team Fortress. Dying in an online game because of lag can be frustrating.

Before proceeding, users on DSL may want to check to see if their wireless router is causing the lag.
Testing Wireless Lag With Ping

To see if wireless lag is a problem, bring up the command prompt and type "ping -t www.google.com". Look at the number for "time=". After every 30 seconds to 2 minutes, one or more of the packets will be much higher than the rest, often above 1000ms.

If other symptoms show up such as dropped packets, the problem is something else such as a problem with the wireless router or internet service provider. Lag can be caused by other network issues such as ISP issues and poor wireless signal quality.
Disabling Vista's Wireless Autoconfiguration

To disable this feature, a replacement wireless client is needed that can connect the computer's wireless adapter to other wireless networks. Normally, the client is downloaded from the support website for the wireless card or computer manufacturer. In notebook computers, the wireless drivers are usually downloaded from the notebook manufacturer's support website. In some cases, a utility may not exist or may run on top of Vista's wireless autoconfig, which means disabling Vista's Wireless Autoconfig means disabling wireless internet. In those cases, the user needs to buy an extra USB wireless adapter that can bypass Vista autoconfiguration.

If a replacement wireless client has been found, click on the Windows icon on the lower left of the screen, the right click on Computer and select Manage. Go into the Services menu and disable "WLAN Autoconfig" service. Keep in mind that disabling the service will disconnect all wireless connections immediately. To restore wireless service, enable the auto-start then start the service manually.

Once Vista's WLAN Autoconfig service has been disabled, use the replacement wireless client to connect to wireless networks instead of using Vista or Windows 7.
WLAN Optimizer and Vista Anti-Lag (VAL)

WLAN Optimizer, written by Martin Majowski, fixes this problem in one small program that's designed to work in Vista and Windows 7 by changing the configuration of Vista's wireless service. This is a freeware program that disables the automatic scans for wireless networks. It can be configured to start automatically along with Windows once the user determines that it fixes the wireless lag. An additional feature of WLAN Optimizer is that it can be configured to turn on streaming mode, which could also stop the lag in streaming data such as Youtube videos. If the program stops running, all settings revert back to the OS defaults so there are no permanent changes if WLAN Optimizer doesn't work. Another program that may work is Vista Anti-Lag (VAL).

For some, both WLAN Optimizer and Vista Anti-Lag do not work. For these users, they need to find a replacement wireless client or perhaps try another wireless adapter which comes with a Vista utility.

Finally, some users have seen success from disabling Windows Defender or the Base Filtering Engine from the Services menu in Control Panel. Keep in mind that both of them reduce system security significantly.

Although the wireless lag seen in many Vista and Windows 7 wireless connections is very annoying, it's something that can usually be fixed by working around Vista's and Windows 7's wireless auto configuration.

Windows 7 freezes randomly for 30-45 sec - Solved

Windows 7 freezes randomly for 30-45 sec - Solved - PCSTATS.com Windows 7 freezes randomly for 30-45 sec - Solved
Wed, September 15 2010 | 5:22PM | Filed under: Tips| PermaLink Posted by: STAFF

After a grueling 12 hour stretch trying to find the solution to why Microsoft Windows 7 would randomly freeze up and not respond for about 30-45 seconds, PCSTATS finally, successfully, found a fix!!!! When Windows
makes you work for a solution to one of its many problems, it really makes you work hard!

The Problem: - Windows 7 would randomly freeze for about 30 seconds, while frozen there would be no error messages or BSOD.... the mouse still worked, but icons and windows and even task manager didn't respond. After 30-45 seconds the computer would come back to life and act normally as if nothing had happened. This problem with Windows 7 freezing would happen at random times, in random applications. Most frustratingly there wasn't an apparent trigger. Nor were there any signs anything had happened immediately after the computer momentarily froze. Task Manager showed nothing. There was no crash message, no BSOD error message, nothing showed up in Event Viewer... there simply wasn't a trace.

PCSTATS tried a number of solutions that didn't work:

Changing the computer power mode to "High Performance" (no change)
Updating every single hardware driver
(no change)
Patching the OS to the latest updates (no change)
Update to the latest BIOS (no change)
Disabling Services, cleaning out MSCONFIG (no change)
Virus Scan and Malware searches (nothing showed up)
System Diagnostic scan (no problems, no change)
MemTest or Memory Diagnostic (no faults, no change)
Installing more memory wouldn't have changed anything as this issue is not an memory problem.

Short of reinstalling Windows 7, we'd exhausted just about every problem solving solution in PCSTATS's extensive Beginners Guides. After wading through countless forums it became clear that reinstalling Windows 7 wasn't going to fix anything either.

Based on systematic troubleshooting; 1) update all drivers, 2) update BIOS, 3) ensure no hardware faults by testing with diagnostic programs 4) updating graphics drivers 5) cleaning out MSCONFIG 6) scanning through Services and last but not least 7) contacting the manufacturer Support department for Tech Support help (no help, recommendation was to reinstall from factory OS image) we had eliminated most of the potential errors that normally would be responsible for a computer crashing, hanging or freezing up.

In the end, we did everything right. It wasn't any one of these things. It was a much more complicated issue solved with a very specific Microsoft Knowledge Base Patch released just two weeks ago!

PCSTATS' solution was to apply Microsoft Hotfix KB2265716 and restart twice.
Hotfix KB2265716: A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 stops responding randomly
Let PCSTATS know if this tip helped you solve the maddening Windows 7 Freezing Randomly for 30 seconds issue with your PC

Fix for Skype problems connecting in Windows 7

Recently, I’ve had problems connecting to Skype lately on my Dell Studio laptop on Windows 7. My Linux box has no problem connecting on the same internet connection so I ruled out network and account problems.

I read about one hundred blog posts and Skype recommendations but nothing worked. I really need Skype as I use it for business daily meetings. After literally hours of trying everthing – uninstalling, removing headset, removing all audio programs, killing Media Player in task manager, killing itunes, etc… I finally found a solution that worked for me. So far, Skype loads like a beauty now, like it should, like it always did. I hope it works for you too.

Fixing the problem
1. First make sure Skype is closed and not running in task manager.
2. Go to Windows Start, find Skype in the programs menu.
2. Right mouse click and click on properties.
3. Click on Previous Versions tab
4. Hopefully you have an earlier version(s) listed in the File versions section. Select the most recent older version and click on the Restore button below.
That’s it! Now start Skype and hopefully, like me, you will be back in business in a jiffy.

Please let me know if this works for you. I’m assuming Skype will come out with a fix to whatever was broken in the latest version (probably due to some Windows update change).

Fix Windows 7 AutoPlay Dialog Box Missing or Not Appear, Display and Pop Up

When inserting a memory card (such as CompactFlash, CF-I, CF-II, Secure Digital, microSD, miniSD, Memory Stick, MS Duo, MS PRO Duo, MS Micro M2, xD, MMC and etc) into a memory card reader, or when putting in a CD, DVD or Blu-Ray disc media into a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-RW or Blu-Ray optical drive, or when plugging in a USB or FireWire (IEEE 1394) removable mass storage device such as USB flash memory key drive or portable external hard disk drive, Windows 7 will always pop-up and display an AutoPlay dialog box (also known as AutoRun) that allows user to contextually select actions or actions that can be performed on the audio, video, pictures or mixed contents on the newly connected drive such as import pictures, play music media files, transfer videos, or open folder to browser files, together with some general options such as activate ReadyBoost caching to speed up computer or use the drive for backup.

Generally, Auto Play is a convenient way to directly access, execute or run many frequently and commonly used functions. However, in some cases, the AutoPlay dialog window does not appear, display, show up nor pop-up after a new drive is connected, despite the newly inserted or plugged in drive is working and can be accessed properly with a proper drive letter. In other words, the AutoPlay function stops working, or the Auto Play dialog box has gone missing, simply disappeared or gone into hiding.

To make matter worse, while the automatic AutoPlay dialog option window is not activating, the “Open AutoPlay” shell extension on right click contextual menu which associated with supported drive type to manually start AutoPlay option has vanished and missing as well.

There may be more than one causes that result in AutoPlay function no longer been used in Windows 7. In order to fix AutoPlay not working issue in Windows 7, try the following solutions or tricks in the guide below, which also points to possible error or reason to affect AutoPlay.

1. Ensure that AutoPlay is used for all media type and devices

Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs, and select Change AutoPlay settings, or Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> AutoPlay.

Ensure that the check box for Use AutoPlay for all media and devices is ticked (enabled).

Then, make sure that for the devices and media that you want AutoPlay dialog to prompt, Ask me every time is selected. If other option is selected, Windows will automatically performing the action without prompting for selection.

Alternatively, just click on Reset all defaults to reset and return AutoPlay settings to its original factory defaults.

2. Ensure that Shell Hardware Detection service is running

Type service.msc in Start Search to run Services console. Locate Shell Hardware Detection, and ensure that the “Service Status” is Running, and “Startup Type” is Automatic.

Else, start the service and change the Startup Type setting accordingly.

3. Ensure that CD-ROM AutoRun is not disabled in registry (for optical drive issue only)

For users facing AutoRun or AutoPlay doesn’t work or display when inserting a disc into optical drive, run Registry Editor (regedit), and navigate to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom

Locate the AutoRun registry value in the right pane, and check that the value data for AutoRun is set as 1 (one), representing enabled. If it is 0 (zero), which mean disabled CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive AutoRun process, re-enable the AutoRun by changing the value to 1.

4. Ensure that NoDriveTypeAutoRun and/or NoDriveAutoRun policy registry value data is correct

For most users, the main culprit of AutoPlay not functioning is NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry key, where its value has been modified unknowingly. Some third-party software program, especially disc imaging or image editing program such as Nero, PowerISO, MagicISO, and even some other application programs such as Rhapsody and VMWare virtualization products intentionally disable AutoPlay feature by changing system’s policy to avoid conflict with the program. The problem is after uninstalling the software, the AutoPlay feature does not re-enable or restore. User has to rely on trick below to re-enable the AutoPlay.

If you’re facing the drive won’t Auto Play or Auto Run issue after installing certain software, try to uninstall the software to see if it fixes the problem. Better still if it’s possible to roll back the system using System Restore to earlier Restore Point when the software is not yet installed.

NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry key is used by Group Policy to configure whether to disable the Autoplay feature on all drives of the type specified. To check this setting, run Registry Editor (regedit), and navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

or (note that above registry value, if exists, will always supersede the below user-specific key),

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Locate the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry entry on the right pane. The registry key is in DWORD hexadecimal value, which each bit determines which type of drive to disable or enable AutoPlay feature. There are many possible value for NoDriveTypeAutoRun, some possible NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry value data includes:

* 0×00000000 (0) enable all AutoPlay and AutoRun.
* 0×00000080 (128) disable AutoPlay on unknown reserved file type.
* 0×00000091 (145) default in Windows Vista and Windows 7.
* 0×00000095 (149) default in Windows XP.
* 0×000000B5 (181) disable AutoRun on CD-ROM drives, plus default unknown drive, removable drive (meant for floppy or ZIP), network drive and reserved drive type.
* 0×000000FF (255) disable AutoRun/AutoPlay on all drive types.

Thus, if the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry value data is set to 0x000000B5 (181) or 0x000000FF (255), which disables AutoRun/AutoPlay on most or all drive types, the AutoPlay won’t work when a drive is connected.

The best bet is to set NoDriveTypeAutoRun to default value as set by Windows 7 and Vista, which is 0×00000091 (hexadecimal) or 145 (decimal). Previous Windows version such as XP uses 0×00000095 (hexadecimal) or 149 (decimal). To enable AutoPlay on all drive types, set NoDriveTypeAutoRun to 0 (zero) or 0×00000080 (128) which only disable AutoPlay on unknown reserved file type.

NoDriveAutoRun registry key, which stored at the same registry location, meanwhile determine whether a particular connected drive should run AutoPlay function or not. When AutoRun is enabled on the drive, media is automatically started when it is inserted in the drive.

By default, Windows 7 and Vista does not add any NoDriveAutoRun registry subkey. And you probably don’t want to block any drive from AutoPlay too. So remove and delete all NoDriveAutoRun key in the registry.

Fix Windows 7 Mobile Connectivity Issues

Share

Windows 7 and Windows Vista based mobile PCs may experience connectivity issues when connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots. Among the issues that may be experienced are poor network performance, and the dropping of the wireless network connection. These connectivity issues are experienced if the mobile computer is running on battery power, or if the mobile PC is connected to a wireless access point in a small office / home office environment or in an enterprise environment,

The issue is caused by Wi-fi hotspots that make use of wireless access points or routers that do not support the power saving protocol of the 802.11 standard. What happens is the following. When the 821.11 wireless network adapter enters sleep state it indicates this to the wireless access point by setting this power save option in its packets that are send to the wireless AP. A wireless access point supporting the power saving protocol would notice the packets, and would begin to buffer packets that are destined for the network adapter of the mobile PC. Packets are send when the radio of the client network adapter turns on.

This behavior enables the wireless network adapter to use less power and to wake up periodically at the correct time to receive network traffic from the AP.

A wireless network adapter that does not support the power saving feature will not recognize the intention of saving power, and continue sending packets to the client adapter. Packets that reach the client adapter in turned off state are lost, and this causes the mobile connectivity issues.

Microsoft
suggests three workarounds / fixes to repair the connectivity issues:
Method 1: Connect the mobile PC to a power source

When you plug the mobile PC into a power source, Windows Vista or Windows 7 switches the wireless network adapter power setting in the default power plan from the Medium Power Save setting to the Maximum Performance setting. This turns off the 802.11 power save mode.

Method 2: Modify the default power saving power plan

Modify the default on-battery power setting for the wireless network adapter. Configure the wireless network adapter to use the Maximum Performance setting when Windows Vista or Windows 7 is configured to use the Balanced power plan or the Power saver power plan. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, type Power Options in the Start Search box, and then click Power Options in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. Click Change plan settings under the power plan that is selected. For example, if the Balanced option is selected, click Change plan settings under Balanced.
3. Click Change advanced power settings.
4. In the Power Options dialog box, expand Wireless Adapter Settings, and then expand Power Saving Mode.
5. In the list that appears next to On battery, click Maximum Performance, and then click OK.

Method 3: Use the “High performance” power plan

If the computer is running on a power plan other than the High performance power plan when you connect to a wireless network, manually change the power plan to High performance. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, type Power Options in the Start Search box, and then click Power Options in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
Note You can also right-click the battery icon in the notification area to access the Power Options command.
2. Click High performance.

Windows 7 crash? it Ii easy to fix It

Windows 7 Crash is a common problem that users face. This is one of the major problems that the users face when they are in the middle of something. Once you stumble upon computer crashes, you should fix the errors fast or it can lead to the complete shut down of your system.

Viruses, corruption in the registry, junk files, low memory and irrelevant programs can all lead to Windows 7 Crash. Once the computer crashes, the first thing you have to do is to identify the cause. Once you are aware of the causes that lead to the crash, it is so easy to redeem the problem.

Always make sure that you have very healthy anti-virus tool in your computer. These anti-virus software can block and also delete the viruses that could harm some of the files. If a healthy anti-virus tool is already installed in the PC, the crashes problem would be not related Virus.

Another reason for Windows 7 Crashes is the running of unnecessary programs. Identify the programs, some may be hidden, and uninstall them. If lots of applications are running in the computer, it could eat up a large part of the memory. However, this problem would rarely cause computer crash and it is not a big deal to the computer which has enough RAM. More RAM can help the applications run very smoothly and prevent the computer from frequent crashes.

Windows 7 Crashes also because of faulty drivers. The drivers that are not in tune with your system can make the computer slow down and crash. When using drivers, make sure that you have the latest ones that fit the system requirements.

The above problems are not import reasons to get computer crashed. Even though one of them cause the crash, it is very easy to fix it manually. The most important reason is the Windows 7 registry. It is the registry where most of the relevant data are stored. If any file in the registry gets corrupted, then the computer can crash. Once you clean the entire corrupt registry, then you can see that your computer performs in a good condition. You can clean the registry on your own or approach a technician to do the job for you. It is very hard for the user to fix registry manually, and very expensive to appeal to a technician. So the best option is to do the cleaning using registry cleaning software.

Fix “Windows Won’t Boot” Problems [Windows 7/Vista]

Is your Windows 7/Vista system failing to boot correctly? Are you getting stuck at the login screen? Did you mess up the boot sector or MBR while tinkering with hard disk partitions? I am sure that, at some point or the other, we have all faced Windows boot loader related debacles. Today I will share a couple of quick tips to solve such problems. They won’t always work, but they are the basic recovery/repair tools that every Windows user should be aware of.
Arrow System File Checker (sfc)

According to Microsoft’s official description, “(SFC) Scans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer”. Given how many times I have managed to mess up winlogon.exe and explorer.exe, I am particularly familiar with the second scenario described above (getting stuck at the login screen). SFC can almost always fix problems caused due to corrupted system files.

Normally SFC can be run from the command prompt. If your system is in an unbootable state, enter Safe Mode (by tapping F8 repeatedly after powering on your system). If Windows fails to boot even into Safe Mode, pop in the Windows installation DVD, select Repair Your Computer option and open Command Prompt. Once cmd is open, type sfc /scannow. After it finishes scanning, restart your system.

SFC is something which is available not only in Vista and 7, but also in older systems like Windows XP. If you don’t want to run SFC manually, you can also use the Startup Repair option offered by the Windows 7 installation disc. This should automatically deploy the sfc tool, among other things. However, it will take more time. Also note that SFC can come in handy if you are experiencing frequent explorer.exe crashes and other system instabilities/performance issues.
Arrow Bootsect and Bootrec

As suggested by its name, bootsect modifies and updates the Windows bootsector. It can be used for writing/copying the boot sector to any disc. This tool is present in the /boot subfolder of the Windows 7/Vista recovery disc.

Bootrec is another system tool offered by the Windows recovery environment. It can be used to easily fix your MBR (Master Boot Record). It’s important to note that bootsect can’t be used to repair the MBR. It only updates the boot sector of every eligible partition (in other words partitions which contain Windows installations). Once common usage scenario for bootrec is to remove GRUB after uninstalling (read deleting) Linux. However, bootrec.exe /fixboot can be used to refresh your boot sector.

If you Windows 7 or Windows Vista system is having trouble booting properly, follow the steps given below:

Arrow As before, boot from your Windows 7/Vista installation disc. Choose Repair Your Computer and launch Command Prompt.
Arrow Type bootrec.exe /fixmbr and hit enter. This will update your MBR.
Arrow Type x:bootbootsect.exe /nt60 all /force and hit enter. This will apply boot code that is compatible with BOOTMGR on all partitions. Of course, boot code will not be updated in partitions which don’t have any Windows installations (in other words partitions which are not bootable). Don’t forget to replace the x with the appropriate target volume (generally your optical drive).
Arrow Now enter bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd. This will scan all partitions for Windows installations. When detected, it will give you the option of selecting the installations you want to add to the bootloader.

Once again, the Startup Repair tool should also be able to take care of the situation in most cases. However, there will be occasions where you will be forced to get your hands dirty. Knowing a little bit about these elementary Windows systemrepair tools can save you a lot of trouble.

How to repair MBR on Windows 7

Sometimes you can corrupt Windows' MBR (Master Boot Record) unintentionally, through installation of another operating system for instance, and you need to repair it before Windows can boot again. The error message that you usually get is "Operating System not found". Under Win 95, 98 and ME, you could have used a standard MS-DOS utility called FDISK in the Command Prompt console. However, FDISK is not distributed with Win NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7. So you either have to resort to finding an alternative utility called MbrFix.exe and run it from floppy, optical or USB drive or follow these direction from the installation DVD to repair your MBR. While these directions are specific to Win 7, you maybe able to use the knowledge gained to apply to your particular Win install.

1

Insert Win 7 installation DVD and boot from DVD drive. While in some older systems you may have to change boot order through system BIOS, most newer systems allow booting from DVD without changing boot order by simply clicking on any key when prompted to doing so.

2

Choose your default "Language", "Time", and "keyboard Input" on the first window and click next.

3

You're now presented with 3 choices. Click on "Repair Your Computer" to gain access to the System Recovery window. Now choose "Command Prompt" in order to run the desired utility which is called "bootsect.exe". Bootsect is located inside the boot folder so change your directory to boot. Now run "bootsect /nt60 C:\" if you had Win 7 initially installed in the C partition. Alternatively, you can run "bootsect /nt60 SYS" or "bootsect /nt60 ALL" to repair the system partition or all partitions. Eject the DVD, and restart computer. Your computer should now boot Win 7 again

70 Fantastic Windows 7 Tips & Tricks For Better Functionality

Windows 7 is much better than the latest version of Windows Vista and it comes with a lot of new features. Unfortunately, some of them aren’t so easy to figure out, so I created a list of the most important tips and tricks and a step-by-step guide that will help you apply all of these great tips and tricks.
1. PC Safeguard

I rarely let anyone use my PC because I’m afraid he will mess it up, but it seems Microsoft has been thinking at me and came with a solution. The PC Safeguard doesn’t let anyone mess your PC settings, because after the user logs off, the configurations are reset back to normal. Of course it will not restore the configurations changed by you, but only the ones done by other users you define.
To use PC Safeguard, go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and create a new account, then select “Set Up Pc Safeguard” and switch it on. Then you can stay relaxed when others use your computer, because you won’t find anything changed, including configurations, downloaded software, installed programs.
2. Screen Calibration

Fortunately, Windows 7 comes with a display calibration wizard that lets you set up the screen brightness properly, so you won’t have any problems viewing photos or text. Windows Vista: Top Tips & Tricks

1. Power button default action

Speed Up Your PC Easily Scan, Repair and Fix Errors Speed & Optimize PC, Free Download

The default action for the Power button on the start menu in Windows Vista is Sleep, which isn’t necessarily useful for everybody. You can configure this setting easily by using the advanced power settings panel, which is a little tricky to get to normally, but we’ll take the shortcut. Open a command prompt (type cmd into the start menu search bar), and then type in the following: powercfg.cpl,1. You could also take the long route (Control Panel Power Options Change Plan Settings Change Advanced Power Settings) Once you get to this dialog, browse down as shown to “Power buttons and lid”

From here, you can change the options:

Power button action – Changes the hardware power button action Start menu power button – Changes the power button on the Start Menu

You can change the power button to either Sleep, Hibernate or Shut Down, or even nothing for the hardware power button.

2. Hide Desktop Icon Text on Windows Vista

Some icons are just obvious enough that nobody should need text below them to tell them what the icon is for. A good example of this is the icon for Internet Explorer. We’re all really used to it by now, and the text just makes it ugly. Just right-click on the shortcut, and choose Rename. Now hold down the Alt key and type in 255 on the keypad to the right of the keyboard. You can’t use the number keys right above the keyboard, they won’t work. If you have a laptop, you can turn on numlock and then use the little number keys next to the regular letters. (You know you always wondered what they were for)

For the first shortcut on the desktop, a simple Alt+255 will do. For the next shortcut, you’ll have to enter the combination twice (Alt+255, Alt+255). For the third, 3 times… you get the idea. The way this works is that the Alt+255 character is blank, so the shortcut filename is actually just named with a character that is completely blank. Since you can’t have two shortcuts or files named the exact same thing, the second shortcut will have to be named with two blank characters.

Now we have a sweet looking icon on the desktop, with no bothersome text beneath it. If you use this tip to rename a folder, you will not be able to rename the folder back using the right-click rename. I’m not sure why this is. What you’ll have to do is open a command prompt and change directory into the containing folder (For instance, the desktop folder), and run this command: ren “Alt+255” “NewFolderName” You will need to actually type the Alt+255 characters where illustrated in the command. It will appear as a space. Note that the Recycle Bin icon won’t work this way.

3. Enable Hidden BootScreen in Windows Vista

The Windows Vista BootScreen is pointless, but Microsoft decided to hide a more visually appealing boot screen that can easily be enabled with very little trouble. I’m not sure why they didn’t make the boot screen better.

1) Press Win+R, type msconfig and press Enter.

2) If User Account Control prompts you to allow the action, click on Continue.

3) In the “System Configuration” window, click on the Boot tab.

4) Select your Windows Vista installation and under “Boot options”, check “No GUI boot”. Press OK.

5) In the dialog that appears, check “Don’t show this message again”, and then click on Restart.

6) Your computer will now reboot, and you will see the Aurora boot screen with text that says “Starting Windows Vista”.

Note: You may get a Windows Defender error on the next startup. You can enable the system config utility using the tray icon and this error will go away.

4. Fix for COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working Error in Vista

If you’ve been getting the error COM Surrogate has stopped working whenever you browse folders containing Divx avi files, it looks like the latest Divx update to codec version 6.5 fixes the issue, but it also seems to remove the thumbnails. If you want to upgrade, just use the divx update checker to grab the new version. Looks like it’s finally fixed, at least the error message is now gone, although I really wish they would have just gotten the thumbnails working instead.

If you are using Nero, you will need to update to version 7.7.5.1 to fix the problem. I think this is the source of the error for most people. If you’ve upgraded Nero and Divx and still have the problem, you can try renaming the file C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadDSFilterNeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak This will break Nero Showtime, however.

5. Stop an Application from Running at Startup in Windows Vista

Back in the old days, there were a lot of places an application could hook itself to run at startup. You had to check the registry in more than one place, as well as your start menu. With Windows Vista, there’s a built-in panel that handles all that for you. To quickly get to this panel, you can open Control Panel, and then type “startup” into the search box. The link for “Stop a program from running at startup” shows up immediately. You could have also opened Windows Defender and fooled around with the menus until you find the right spot, but this seems quicker to me. Now you can see the Windows Defender screen that lets you manage the startup programs. You can choose to Remove or just Disable any startup item using this panel, as well as lots of other useful information so that you can see what each item is.

6. Emptying Windows Vista Temp Files Directory

Windows Vista Disk Cleanup wizard is really not all that bad, but I did find a small problem with it… It doesn’t fully empty your temp folder. It only allows you to delete temporary files that haven’t been modified in a week. If you’ve recently done a lot of editing or something that generates large temporary files, you may want to manually clean up. Just type in %TEMP% into the start menu search box, and hit enter. You’ll immediate be taken to the temporary files folder, where you can delete whatever you feel like.

7. Disable User Account Control(UAC) For Administrators Only

If you can’t stand the User Account Control prompts, but you’d still like to retain a little bit of security, you can disable it for Administrator accounts only. What we’ll be doing is actually changing Windows Vista to automatically elevate the privilege level for administrators without prompting. The nice thing about doing it this way is that regular users as well as Internet Explorer still run as regular users, and would still use the normal security mechanisms. To configure this setting on Windows Vista Business and Ultimate, you can use the Local Security Policy configuration.

Speed Up Your PC Easily Scan, Repair and Fix Errors Speed & Optimize PC, Free Download Just type in secpol.msc into the Start menu search box and hit enter. Now browse down to Local Policies Security Options Find the following in the list: “User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode” and double-click on it. Change the setting to “Elevate without prompting”. You should be all done.

This is an easier method that you can use to do the same thing from the GUI interface.

Open up Control Panel, and type in user account into the search box. You’ll see the link for “Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off”. Click it. Uncheck the box, and reboot your computer. You should be done with obnoxious prompts!

8. Using Windows Vista System Restore

Windows Vista has a feature called System Restore that automatically backs up registry and system files whenever you install new software or drivers. This feature is useful when you install evil software that makes your computer run really slow. But don’t worry, System Restore won’t remove Windows Vista.

Using System Restore in Windows Vista

There are two places that you can use the system restore feature from. From within Windows, you can just type restore into the Start menu search box, and you’ll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu, or you can type rstrui into the search box and hit enter. Your choice. You will immediate see a screen where you can choose to roll back the system to the last restore point. You can select “Recommended restore”, and just click next, or you can choose a different restore point. If you do choose a different restore point, you will see a list of restore points that you can choose from. Click one of them, and you will have to confirm and then restart your computer to roll the system back. If your system won’t boot If you can’t even get into windows, you can boot off the installation dvd, and choose the “Repair your computer” option on the lower left hand side. Click next on the next screen. Now choose System Restore from the System Recovery dialog. It will take a few seconds to come up, and you will see the same screen that you would see in Windows. Click next, and on the next screen select the drive that your copy of Windows Vista is installed on. Click Finish, and Vista will roll back to the previous restore point. Really pretty simple stuff. I absolutely recommend keeping the system restore feature on in Vista !

9. Verify the Integrity of Windows Vista System Files Windows Vista includes a utility that will scan your system for corrupt, changed or missing system files. Running this from the command prompt is much easier than booting off the dvd into repair mode. To run this utility, you will need to open a command prompt in administrator mode. You can do that by right clicking the Command Prompt in the list and choose “Run as Administrator” Once you have an administrator command prompt open, you can run the utility by using the following syntax: SFC [/SCANNOW] [/VERIFYONLY] [/SCANFILE=] [/VERIFYFILE=] [/OFFWINDIR= /OFFBOOTDIR=] The most useful command is just to scan immediately, which will scan and attempt to repair any files that are changed or corrupted. You can run that command with this command: sfc /scannow

10. Disable Hibernation & delete the Hibernation file

Windows places a file on your hard drive that it uses when your computer goes into hibernation mode. If you do not use hibernation mode, or your computer does not properly support it, you may want to disable hibernation and clear the file off your hard drive to free up some space (the file will use as much space as you have in physical memory, so if you have 1GB of RAM, it’s going to use 1GB of your hard drive space).

Disable Hibernation:

1. Click Start, All Programs, and then right click on “Command Prompt”.

2. From the context menu click on “Run as administrator”.

3. If User Account Control prompts you to allow the action, click on Continue.

4. In the command prompt window, type “powercfg –h off” (without the quotes).

5. Close the Command Prompt window.

Delete the Hibernation File:

1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click “Disk Cleanup”.

2. If prompted to choose a drive, select the drive in which Windows Vista is installed on to and press OK.

3. Disk Cleanup will scan the hard drive and present you with a list of options.

4. Check “Hibernation File Cleaner”, and then click OK.

5. When asked “Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files?” click on the Delete Files button .

Online Scan - 4 Good Online Scans to Keep Your Computer Clean

Many people either don't have the money or don't have any interest in installing an anti virus or anti spyware program. While I feel that that is a mistake, an online scan can make a good alternative. You just have to use the right online scan. Check out the 4 online scans I recommend.

BitDefender

BitDefender is an amazing online anti virus scan. I found that it is equally effective, if not more so, than the AVG Free I run. My biggest complain about it is it gets plenty of false positives. False positives are when it thinks something is a virus, but it isn't actually a virus. Your average user probably won't see this problem too much, because you won't have nearly as much stuff on your computer as I do. Overall, I believe BitDefender is the best online scan out there.

HouseCall

Another good online virus scan. HouseCall has been around for a long time and a lot of people like it. I believe it is also very good, but I like BitDefender a bit more.

Panda

I love Panda's anti virus. I believe Panda anti virus is the only anti virus truly worth paying for. It's an absolute beast. That said, I'm not as sure about their online scan, mainly because I can't try it. It currently isn't compatible with Windows Vista, so I'm out of luck. They plan on changing that soon. Still, if it's anywhere near as good as their program's scan, it'll be a very good one to try.

Ewido

Ewido is the only online spyware scan I can recommend. I found Ewido to actually be MORE effective than the standard programs I was running. Even after running those programs, Ewido still found more stuff, some things as serious as Trojan horses! Definitely run Ewido.

I highly suggest running at least one of the virus scans and Ewido about once every week or two, even if you have programs installed for those jobs. A free second opinion never hurt anyone.

How to install Linux - tips and concepts

Every day there are more that are passed to Linux but still are many who have an incredible fear to install. There is still this belief in some parts of linux gurus is only for computer science. Some are afraid to install Linux on their PCs because they have important things and is always fear of losing everything. So I'll try to explain a little like process of installation of almost all distros in general and some tips and concepts you need to know to reduce to almost zero risk of damaging something during installation.

Distributions

First need to know that there is no "one linux, linux distributions there. The distributions are different versions with different features, some are easier to handle than others, some have special features such as being designed to work on servers or serve a special group of people such as distributions designed specifically for programmers.

The one you are interested in all distros designed for home and average user, I recommend including: Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint and Mandriva to be easiest to use and on which more info is available online.

Linux and Windows

It is a basic question that I have done many times. You can install linux with windows? The answer is YES. A term to remember is GRUB, which is what is responsible for managing whole issue of starting pc. Those who install Linux alongside Windows will then boot to a menu which will allow to boot. Many installed linux with windows because they are afraid they do not like linux or something. I would tell them that directly encourage and install linux and windows erased. They will not regret it.

Partitions

The hard disk partitions is issue that most have difficulty learning to all learners and what gives them more afraid. It really is something easy to learn and understand. In windows probably have one, two or more partitions. Example: you can have a partition called C where windows and other D where they have music, movies and important documents. Good on Linux partitions do not call letters, but rather would be something like: partition /dev/sda1 is equivalent of C and partition /dev/sda2 is equivalent to D.

What partitions needed for Linux? Basically you need only 2 but it is advisable to 3. The two are necessary to move system partition linux itself, this partition is called root and is symbolized by slash (/) and another partition called SWAP, the latter is a partition that acts as virtual memory and does nothing more that.

Apart from these two is always recommended to make a partition for your home folder, this partition is called HOME and symbolizes so / home. See that has a bar below is because HOME is part of root (/). It is good to create this partition it so when they change distro or version of Linux will always have your saved settings, desktop preferences and preferences of its applications such as firefox bookmarks or email accounts in thunderbird.

All partitions can be created from same linux while installing but I always recommend to make them from an environment they know best, that is from windows and using some program called Partition Magic. If you can not do partitions ask your brother, uncle, friend or anyone who has a minimum knowledge of computing and hara.

The partition sizes

A larger question is size of partitions. It's simple, make root with a minimum of 4GB and at least 2GB for HOME, and swap partition of 1GB or 1.5GB.

If you have possibility of allocating more size to partitions is also good to know limits, is really no limit as to maximum size but some recommendations:

* The roots make a maximum of 10 gigabytes, almost no one reaches that limit.
* The maximum SWAP 2GB, nobody uses more than 2GB.
* HOME And if they can make it as big as you want.

The root user and all rest

Know types of users is basic to linux then do various tasks in system. There are two types of users in linux:

The root: It is super user, administrator. The root user can change settings to taste, remove what you want and manage hardware as you want. It's root is only one who can install programs and this is something to consider.

The rest: Ordinary users will not have permissions for root user. You may not install programs or delete important files. By default this will be user to use and is one of main reasons why Linux is so safe, because with common user can not break things

The installation process

Each distribution has an installation process that basically consists of select language, select time zone, set partitions, choose root password (do not forget this password!) And place data from a normal user, it would be best that this user does not have same password that user root.

Programs

Installing programs on Linux is just as painless to install on windows. The only difference is that not only come with. Exe in linux extensions are best known. Deb and. Rpm. The hoes so, in some distros are used. Deb and in others. Rpm, eg on Ubuntu and Linux Mint are used. Deb and Fedora's. Rpm

Where to buy? That's best part, you have to look anywhere, is more or need to acordate anything about extensions or anything because in linux you have all programs you want on free sources and public access.

Repositories

The Linux repositories are places on web where they are stored all or great majority of programs for linux. Each distribution has its own list of repositories and what it gives us is installation of programs by just typing a single command. For example: you want to install firefox? So open a console and type "sudo apt-get install firefox" and only come down and be installed. Want to thunderbird? "Sudo apt-get install thunderbird" and ready.

That string may vary dependendiendo of distribution you use. For example if you use Arch Linux instead of "sudo apt-get install" serious "sudo pacman-S" but still is a very easy to install programs because they will have to find a place to download them no problem on how to install it yourself.

The console

While almost everything in linux can be done today with graphics programs blogs, forums and sites are explaining things linux using console. Why? Because it is faster and easier. Fear of a console is stupid, it's just a small program where you write something and press enter. In Ubuntu you can find it in Applications-> Accessories-> Terminal and is better than fence they were afraid because all statutes are explained almost always using console commands.

Not much more to know, with 10 minutes of reading, now you know more than linux but noted that this post is written for beginners.

Optimize Windows 7 Performance

If you’ve been using Windows 7 and having trouble with performance, here are some helpful tips & tweaks for maintaining PC’s performance, not only in Windows 7, but in any other as well. We hope this might be helpful for other users as well.

1. Simply go to add-remove programs and remove everything that is not necessary and any program trials that you will not be subscribing to.

2. What we personally believe that shutting the system down every night is best for any computer. People always argue that turning a computer on and off constantly is harder on the hard drive, but as par hard drive manufacturers, that this is not the case with latest hard drives.

3. While Windows 7 has made leaps and bounds in managing programs and memory, Microsoft new Windows 7 is certainly no miracle worker. It can only do so much with so little. If you are trying to run a million programs on only 1GB of Memory or less, then its right time to upgrade RAM. After Windows has used up the allotted memory, it replaces actual Ram with a page file, which is much slower. If you have noticed your system performing slow after much use, you may want to do a memory check.

4. Users are always looking at speeding up boot times and usually this is possible by keeping those startup programs from loading every-time Windows does. You can access a list of startup programs by clicking on Start then typing ‘msconfig’ into the search box, click on the Startup tab and uncheck those programs that you’d prefer not to have run at startup.

5. As is often the case with PC’s who have had a Windows installation for a while without reformatting, an at capacity hard drive may slow down your Windows 7 installation. Most users will frequently install new software and never paid attention about removing previous installed or unused software titles.

6. When a user is continuously installing and removing programs, a hard drive will leave pieces of those programs in different places throughout the entire drive. When the user goes to use a specific program, the hard drive will need to search different locations to access that information, creating a longer wait time. To solve this, a hard drive should be defragmented fairly often.

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Rc Windows

Installing Microsoft Windows 7 RC:First of all the why would you want to do this? There are a couple reasons.1. Hardware and software are becoming more sophisticated so in order to stay in front of the curve you should know what technologies are available.2. Increase productivity – people often forget that increasing production is the main reason that they invest in technology to begin with.3. Its Free for 13 months. (I like free)….4. Vista is an abomination. Well maybe it’s not that bad but certainly 7 is a lot faster and a lot better.5. You can always go back to XP or Vista if it does not work for you. Very little risk.Check if it will run on your system:

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor RC

Windows

A PC for testing with these system requirements:
o 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
o 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
o 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
o DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor: Not a bad idea to run this on your current system:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1b544e90-7659-4bd9-9e51-2497c146af15

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. DVD burner
2. Blank DVD
3. ISO burning software. http://download.cnet.com/UltraISO-Premium/3000-2646_4-10177302.html
4. Partitioning software: you do not need to partition. (http://www.partition-tool.com/ ) And in fact I set off for partitions in this demonstration but you can get away with one or none
5. Microsoft Windows live account
6. Download of Windows 7 RC
7. External hard drive for backup, or something comparable.

Installing Windows 7

Step one:

Get everything backed up. This is a great time to take inventory of your software and program files to make sure in the case of an emergency that you’ll be able to recover your data quickly. As part of a best practice I put all of my data files on one separate hard drive and in addition I use Carbonite Backup (http://www.carbonite.com/) along with Amazon S3 (http://aws.amazon.com/s3/). You may think this is overkill but you” Always” want to have more than one shot at your data. Do not just depend on one source for backup.

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor RC is based on technology only supported by computers running Windows XP (or RC version of Windows Vista). If your computer is equipped with operating systems Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 95, you should carefully compare the features of your computer with the information provided on the official site.. In general, PCs purchased over the last two years are more likely to support Windows Vista without requiring hardware upgrade

Windows Vista Blue Screen - Free Tips to Fix This Error

Windows Vista is one of the most recent systems that Windows came up with. If you are a Vista user, then you will know just how good it is. While Vista is indeed a great operating system, it still experiences a fair share of errors and other complications every now and then.

Everyone who uses the operating system knows about the infamous Windows Vista blue screen. It can pop up any time and might cause major problems for the user. Imagine yourself pounding away at the keyboard since you want to finish your term paper and then suddenly your computer monitor shows a blue screen consisting of several characters. The only way that you can get your computer running normally is to fix the problem by yourself or get a technician to do it for you. You will surely hate how blue screen errors destroy your mood and your computer. Below are some facts that you have to keep in mind regarding your computer and the blue screen.

Virtually every computer in the world has its own registry, which is a database composed of files. When a computer user continuously downloads hardware or software into the computer, the files will be saved in the registry. Although some of the software or hardware that you download into your system is necessary for your computer, there are a few programs that are built on outdated languages. Such programs will interfere with your computer's registry and disables it from functioning well, hence the birth of the Windows Vista blue screen.

If you have downloaded or used any kinds of software after you got your computer, you should check or have it checked for a corrupt registry. It is a wise decision to acquire a registry cleaner to maintain the cleanliness of your registry and avoid getting the "blue screen of death". Sluggish boot ups are one of the starting signs of registry problems since this is the time when the registry has to choose among all the various startup programs like firewall and anti-virus.

There are also times when there is extra information on the registry that is too big and messy. Consequently, the system gets confused with assigning priorities and opening files. Once this continues, it will result to the blue screen. Error messages are very recurrent with corrupted registries. When the system gets tired of sorting through different scraps of excessive and superfluous information, it is stopped by useless program pieces. Crashes and freezes can also be the result of registry errors.

Fortunately, instead of going to a technician and paying big money to get your computer repaired, there is an easier and much cheaper way. This is through acquiring a registry cleaner program. This program normally sorts through all the various program scraps in your registry and finds out which of the information are important. The other unnecessary scraps are deleted automatically. A registry cleaner program also gets the job done within minutes. And most of all, it maintains the proper functioning of your computer so that you need not experience memory dump, Windows Vista blue screen or any other kinds of errors.
