If you own an iPod Touch but are a Linux user, that can be a problem since transferring songs to an iPod Touch in Linux is no easy task. Apple actually made it as difficult as possible for such a feat as syncing an iPod touch to any application other than iTunes to be performed. However, forbidden does not equate to impossible, though even if it is doable, it is not the most efficient or stable process, especially since a restore in Linux in not possible. It will also require that your device is jailbroken, meaning Apple’s firmware restrictions must have already been removed in order for you to install custom applications. The process of jailbreaking is simple and reversible, and the instructions will not be very hard to find over the Internet.

Setting up. First, set up your iPod by ensuring that it is already jailbroken. Use Installer.app to install Open SSH and the BSD Subsystem, both of which can be found under the system tab in the Install panel on Installer. Make sure that auto-lock is set to never and that you set a static IP address outside of your IP range, since you will be needing the iPod Touch’s IP to sync with Linux.

Installing software. Next and more complex, you will need to install the software on Ubuntu, though everything that you will need will be in the Ubuntu 8.04 repositories. Install GTKpod from the gtkpod-aac package, which you will use to sync your iPod touch:

Install iPod Convenience which will automate mounting and unmounting the newest iPods:
sudo apt-get install ipod-convenience
When you are prompted for your device’s IP address and a mount point, enter the IP you set as your static IP for your iPod Touch and use the default mount point.

Syncing. Use iPod Convenience to mount the iPod Touch by running the following command:
ipod-touch-mount
Once you start GTKpod, you can already use it to sync your iPod Touch in Linux.

GTKpod will have no trouble syncing music, videos and photos, except encrypted music files like those from the iTunes Music Store or videos that are not encoded in H.264 with AAC audio and other special settings.

The process of transferring songs to an iPod Touch in Linux is rather technical and complex, but certainly very much well worth it if you have no other compatible operating system to do the syncing with. If you’re pretty new in navigating your iPod Touch and are uncomfortable to try the method however, it would be wise to ask help from one who is already experienced and/or knowledgeable in the process discussed. If you cannot find such person, you can go to your local or nearest gadgets or techie hub for professional assistance.

A couple of weeks ago, Nick tried to convince us that we should all be using Macs. But why would you want to use a Mac (or a PC) when you could have an operating system that:

• Is free
• Does not slow down after a while and limit your productivity
• Does not need extra antivirus protection besides regular updates
• Has tens of thousands of programs available for free
• Has a vigorous community who are willing to help you solve any problems you might have?

That operating system is Linux. And I think that it is high time that more bioscientists got to know Linux so I have written this article to help YOU do so.

Linux is not (just) for computer geeks

You have probably heard of Linux. And you might think that it is complicated stuff, reserved for the bioinformatics geeks down the corridor. But this is no longer true.

Since emerging from a “garage project” run by Finnish software developer Linus Torvalds, Linux has benefited from the efforts of thousands (or tens of thousands) of developers who have built it into an extremely powerful operating system with a rich collection of free software to fulfill any requirement you might have.

Best of all it is a free, open source and community supported operating system that can be run right on the computer you are using now, with no need to remove your favorite operating system (be it Windows or Mac).

And before you ask if it is any good, what do you think most of the world’s top supercomputers run: OSX, Windows or Linux? The answer is here!

Know your distros

You don’t have to go to a computer shop to get Linux. It is available for free download from various websites in the form of distributions (or “distros”).

A variety of distros are available and the differences between them are in the types of software that comes packaged with the operating system. Many are specialized for specific tasks like graphic design, sound mixing/editing or performing scientific work (e.g. calculations or DNA alignments). You can find more information about distros here.

I recommend you try Linux out and see if it is better for you than the commercial operating system you are using now. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

But where do you start? Here’s where:

Explore the power of Linux on your current machine without changing a thing

The easiest way of exploring Linux is to pick and download a “live” CD/DVD image, which can be burned onto a CD or DVD, inserted into your drive and after a restart you’ll have a basic, fully set up and working Linux environment without any alterations made to your computer.

And don’t worry, if you remove the disc from your drive and restart the computer, your old Windows or Mac OS will boot up as normal.

For first timers I’d recommend Ubuntu because this distro is compiled to be easy and convenient to use. But if you are feeling adventurous, there are many other examples of â€?liveâ€? distros here .

But be warned the live CD/DVD approach will not show you the full power of Linux. Everything will be a bit slower because it has to be loaded and unpacked on-the-fly from a slow optical disk!

Installing Ubuntu Linux on your current machine

If you like what you see, you can then install Linux on your hard drive very easily. Here’s the official guide on how to get set up an up-to-date Ubuntu system.

For the impatient here is what you need to do:

1. Make a backup!

Whenever you are delving into the workings of your computer you should make a full backup of your hard drive. Better safe than sorry.

2. Download and start the installer
Most distros have very beginner-friendly installer, so you do not have to worry about this process at all. Ubuntu has such an installer so, again I’d recommend it for your first Linux experience.

Download the installer and burn it onto a CD or DVD. Then you will be able to start the installer by double-clicking on its desktop icon.

3. Resize your hard disk

Most likely you will set up Linux as a second operating system. In this case you’ll need to have at least 5-6 GBs of free space on your hard drive, which needs to be partitioned off from the rest of your drive. This can be easily done on-the-fly during the installation process.

A standard Ubuntu system needs at least 5-6 GBs of free space where you can create the Linux specific partition(s). It is best to have at least two partitions:

• A 5 GB ext3 partition. This should have “/” as the mount point. Don’t worry — all will become clear during the installation.

• A 1 GBÂ linux swap partition. This acts as the scratch disk, where Linux can use disk space as “virtual memory”. More information on partitioning, filesystems and mount points can be found here.

4. Choose your software

You can get all of the basics like a web browser, email clients, word processors, spreadsheets and media players by simply accepting (1 click!) the pre-selected, default set of to-be-installed packages from a huge list of available software.

If you need to have other programs on your computer than the default ones you can certainly select them in the installer as an option. As I mentioned earlier, there are a great number of bio-specific software packages out there that do great things, and they are all FREE.

5. If you ever need help, no problem.

If you have any problem you can even turn to the comprehensive online documentation and user forums for help. Since Linux and most of the programs built for it are open source which means that the core operating system and most of the utilities were born and brought up in a highly collaborative and open community so you should be able to find an answer to even the most difficult question.

And if you have a very specific problem (on Linux or anything else for that matter) don’t be afraid to use your favorite web search engine… it will help you a lot!

Network Time Protocol (NTP) provides algorithms and defines messages for the synchronisation of time clients to an accurate time reference. This article discusses how to configure a Linux NTP Time Server to synchronise time with an Internet based public NTP Server.

NTP server systems fall into two categories: primary reference servers and secondary reference servers. Primary reference servers use an external timing reference to provide time, such as GPS or radio clocks. Secondary reference servers synchronise with primary reference NTP servers and offer slightly reduced accuracy. Primary reference servers are designated stratum 1 servers, while secondary servers have a stratum greater than 1.

The NTP Distribution

The NTP source code is freely available from the Network Time Protocol web site. The current version available for download is 4.2.4. NTP is available for the Linux operating systems with ports available for Windows NT. Once the source code is downloaded, it should be configured, compiled and installed on the host machine. Many Linux operating systems, such as RedHat, offer NTP RPM packages.

Configuring NTP

The ‘ntp.conf’ file is main source of configuration information for a NTP server installation. Amongst other things, it contains a list of reference clocks that the installation is to synchronise. A list of NTP server references is specified with the ‘server’ configuration command thus:

Controlling the NTP Server Daemon

Once configured, the NTP daemon can be started, stopped and restarted using the commands: ‘ntpd start’; ‘ntpd stop’ and ‘ntpd restart’. The NTP server daemon can be queried using the ‘ntpq –p’ command. The ntpq command queries the NTP server for synchronisation status and provides a list of servers with synchronisation information for each server.

NTP Access Control

Access to the NTP server can be restricted using the ‘restrict’ directive in the ntp.conf file. You can restrict all access to the NTP server with:

1.0 Why are my downloads going slow?

1.1 Reason 1: Your ISP is limiting your download speed

Some ISPs are limiting download speeds by controlling the bandwidth allocated to traffic using the default BitTorrent ports, which are 6881 to 6999.

This is not just a problem for those who have nasty ISPs, it affects everybody. To avoid ISPs from damaging the efficiency of a torrent with their controls, some stringent tracker owners are blocking users trying to connect on the standard ports.

So whether your ISP is limiting you or not, all BitTorrent users should stop using the default ports.

For simplicity, this guide recommends the use of port 16881. Adding a 1 to the start is simple administratively, and is in a range unlikely to be used by other programs.

You then need to set up your client to use the new port.

AZUREUS
Tools -> Options -> Connection
-> Add a ?1? before the current listen port number. For example, 6881 will now be 16881.

uTorrent
Options -> Preferences -> Connection
-> Type 16881 for the port number for incoming connections. Untick the box for Randomize Port.

Whatever client you use, make sure you update anywhere else you have entered the port numbers to account for the change.

By completing this section, you have helped to avoid problems later down the line, but this will not solve the majority of slow downloads. Therefore, move on to reason 2.

1.2 Reason 2: You have a ?NAT Error?

BitTorrent works on a credit system. By uploading parts of a file to other people, they allow you to download parts of the file from them. This is BitTorrents anti-leech measure. However, if you have a problem with your NAT (anything between you and the internet, such as a router or firewall), you will not get credit for what you are uploading. The only downloading that you can do is from people who upload a small amount to you in the hope that you will return the favour. Since their client will not recognise your response if you have a NAT problem, then they will stop uploading to you shortly after. This is what is causing your problem. You may also notice that torrent speeds go very high for 5 minutes, before slowing back down to 0-5kb/s.

1.2.1 How do I know if I have this problem?

You might not have a problem at all. Before continuing with this guide, leave your torrent running for at least ten minutes. If the speed hasn’t picked up, stop and restart the torrent. If that fails, try at least two other torrents. If you are still having problems, continue on…

Start to download a file using your chosen client.

AZUREUS
Wait a while for the torrent to get started; this may take up to five minutes.
Look in the ?Health? column. If it is showing a yellow spot, then you need to configure your firewall/NAT/router. If it is Green then all is OK. Your slow downloads are being caused by something else.

Azureus can also check your configuration for you.
Select ?Tools? -> ?NAT / Firewall Test?

If the result is ?OK?, then your slow speeds are being caused by something else.

PLEASE NOTE: The Azureus checker can report a false NAT error if you are running PeerGuardian or Protowall. Make sure these are disabled before using the Azureus wizard.

Wait a while for the torrent to get started; this may take up to five minutes.
On the status bar, look for either a yellow warning triangle, or a green dot. If there is a yellow warning triangle, then you need to configure your firewall/NAT/router. If it is green then all is OK and your slow downloads are being caused by something else.

uTorrent can also check your configuration for you.

Check the current port is set to the port used in the first section, i.e. 16881.
Click ?Test if port is forwarded properly?.

2.0 It?s showing yellow / warning triangle, I have a NAT error ? what do I do?

You need to configure your computer and/or network to accept incoming BitTorrent port connections. The tracker port is 6969. If this port is not correctly configured, downloads will not start at all. The download/upload ports used in this guide are 16881-16889. It is these ports that are causing your problems.

2.1 Disable UPnP

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), it is a feature that works with some compatible routers to open the required ports automatically. However, some routers, even if they are compatible with UPnP, have problems with this.

AZUREUS
Tools -> Options
Expand “Plugins” on the left hand tree.
Select “UPnP”
Deselect “Enable UPnP”

uTORRENT
Options -> Preferences -> Connection
Deselect ?Enable UPnP port mapping?.

2.2 Configure Your XP Firewall (ICF: Internet Connection Firewall)

Please go to the appropriate sub-section.

2.2.2 Configure ICF in SP2

-> Open your Windows Control Panel and select ?Security Centre.?
-> Scroll down to the ?Manage security settings for:? section and select ?Firewall?
-> Decide whether you want to keep the firewall on or off. Make an informed decision based on more than the information provided by Microsoft. If you decide to switch it off, then do so and move onto section 2.2. Otherwise, continue this section.
-> Select the ?Exceptions? tab.
-> Select ?Add Port??
-> Name: = BitTorrent (or anything of your choice)
-> Port number: = 16881
-> TCP/UDP = TCP

If your connection is shared using Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), go to section 2.3.
There are too many routers to cover in this guide, so it is time to head to Google. Search for port forwarding, BitTorrent and the name of your router. Lots of manufacturers provide specific information on their sites. A generic guide to port forwarding for most routers can be found at PortForward.com.

As with routers, there are too many to cover here, so time to head to Google. Unlike with other sections to this guide, ports only have to be opened, rather than forwarded.

With both AZUREUS and uTorrent, open port 16881.

3.0 Multiple BitTorrent users on a LAN

The same port can not be forwarded to different computers, so decide who gets which ports, for example:
192.168.0.2 = 16881
192.168.0.3 = 16882 etc.

Set up your router or ICS to forward the ports to the chosen computers.

Now you need to set up the BitTorrent Clients:

AZUREUS
Each computer only needs one port forwarded to it.
-> Tools -> Options
-> “Connection” on the side menu
-> On ?Incoming TCP Listen Port? enter the port number that is being forwarded to that computer. Taking from the above example, computer 192.168.0.3 would enter 16884.
-> Repeat for all the users

uTORRENT
Options -> Preferences -> Connection -> is equal to 16881.
-> Set “Port used for incoming connections? to the port number that is being forwarded to that computer. Taking from the above example, computer 192.168.0.3 would enter 16884.

-> Repeat for all users.

4.0 Other things that could be wrong

Try limiting your upload if you have ADSL/DSL. Sometimes BitTorrent can try to upload so much that it floods your upload, making it difficult for incoming connections. Slyck.com explains further:

It might seem strange to hear that your upload speed can directly affect your download speed, but it can, and quite dramatically. The reason behind it is based on the way the Internet works. When you download a file (or in this case, chunks of a file), your computer sends a tiny message back to the source computer, called an ACKnowledgement packet. These ACK packets tell the source computer that chunk #1 has arrived OK, please send #2. When #2 is down, it sends another, and so on. The source computer will not send #3 until it gets the ACK from #2. It uses a small amount of your upload bandwidth to do this. This works fine when downloading files off the Internet, but with P2P, you tend to upload as well.

This is especially true with BitTorrent ? because you upload as well. If done efficiently, downloads can be very fast. The problem lies with the fact that you upload *so much* that the ACK’s do not get sent out fast enough, which slows your download. The simplest way to solve this is to limit your upload bandwidth. 80% of the maximum is usually recommended, but I find I can set it to 90% with no adverse effects. Tidak ada yang pernah mendengar mengenai Lotus sampai satu pemikiran cemerlang melaksanakan perubahan generasi menciptakan Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet pertama yang dirancang khusus untuk IBM PC.

Apple’s Macintosh dan Microsoft Windows adalah sang pemenang selanjutnya, ketika dunia menginginkan pengolahan grafik dan meninggalkan program lama yang hanya menampilkan teks. Untuk mendapatkan kemenangan besar, anda pun harus mengkonsentrasikan diri pada perubahan generasi, sesuatu yang diabaikan perusahaan besar. Dan taruhannya mahal sekali. Jika mendengar nama ini, orang akan langsung ingat dua hal, yakni Microsoft dan kekayaan. Yah, memang tak bisa dimungkiri, orang mengenal Bill Gates sebagai pendiri perusahaan piranti lunak terbesar di dunia. Selain itu, kekayaan yang diperolehnya dari perusahaan itu telah membuatnya jadi orang terkaya di dunia beberapa tahun berturut-turut, tanpa pernah tergeser ke posisi kedua sekalipun. Konon, kekayaannya mencapai 71% nilai anggaran belanja negara kita, yakni lebih dari Rp500 triliun. Sungguh fantastis!

Tapi, semua itu tentu melalui proses panjang. Semua berawal dari impian Bill Gates saat masih muda. Ketika itu, sekitar tahun 70-an, ia yang hobi mengutak-atik program komputer memimpikan bisa menghadirkan komputer ke rumah-rumah. Sesuatu yang dianggap sulit diwujudkan pada masa itu. Sebab, pada tahun itu komputer masih berukuran sangat besar dan hanya dimanfaatkan untuk hal-hal tertentu saja.

Kelahiran Seattle dari pasangan seorang pengacara dan pegawai bank ini memang terkenal cukup ambisius. Pada saat masih sekolah dasar, semangatnya yang cenderung menyulitkannya dalam pergaulan membuat orang tuanya memindahkan sekolahnya ke sekolah unggulan khusus laki-laki di Lakeside School. Di sekolah itulah ia pertama kali berkenalan dengan dunia yang mengantarkan pada bakatnya di bidang pemrograman. Saat itu ia mengenal mesin teletype, semacam mesin ketik yang bisa diberi program sederhana. Dari mesin itu, kemudian dia mulai menguasai dengan baik bahasa pemrograman BASIC. Ia pun lantas bertemu dengan komunitas penggemar program dan sering menghabiskan waktunya berjam-jam untuk menekuni hobi tersebut.

Ayah tiga anak ini kemudian mengembangkan bakatnya saat kuliah di Universitas Harvard. Namun, saat kuliah di universitas elit di Amerika itu, lagi-lagi ambisi Bill Gates membuatnya lebih memilih untuk mewujudkan impiannya, dibandingkan harus menyelesaikan studi. Ia memilih drop out dan berkomitmen kuat untuk mewujudkan ambisinya.

Komitmen itu diwujudkan dengan ketekunan, ketelatenan, dan keuletan, sehingga pelan tapi pasti hobinya membuat program telah menjadi bisnis yang kian menguntungkan. Ia kemudian juga bertemu dengan Paul Allen, rekan yang kemudian turut membantunya mewujudkan impian menghadirkan komputer ke rumah-rumah. Duet mereka banyak menghasilnya program-program unggulan, salah satunya MS-DOS yang kemudian banyak dipakai sebagai software di berbagai komputer.

Berbagai inovasi tak henti dilakukannya. Hasilnya? Seperti yang dilihat banyak orang saat ini. Impian Bill Gates telah menjadi nyata. Hampir setiap rumah, kini mempunyai komputer. Dan, hebatnya, sistem operasinya kebanyakan menggunakan produk Microsoft. Inilah yang membuat pundi-pundinya terus mengembang.

Kini, dengan kekayaannya tersebut, Bill Gates dan istrinya, Melinda, kemudian mendirikan Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Yayasan bentukan Gates ini digunakan untuk berbagai kegiatan sosial. Mulai dari menyalurkan beasiswa kepada kaum minoritas, berperang melawan penyakit seperti AIDS dan berbagai penyakit lainnya, hingga memerangi kelaparan dan kemiskinan. Tak tanggung-tanggung, pasangan suami istri ini menyumbangkan lebih dari US$ 5 miliar untuk kepentingan yayasan ini. Sebuah sumbangan terbesar di dunia yang pernah diberikan pada sebuah yayasan sosial.

Sebuah impian, jika disertai dengan keyakinan kuat dan kerja keras, serta dilandasi komitmen perjuangan tanpa henti, akan memberi hasil yang gemilang. Bill Gates adalah bukti nyata bahwa impiannya yang pernah dianggap mustahil, kini mampu diwujudkannya. Nilai keyakinan dan perjuangan inilah yang bisa kita contoh dalam kehidupan kita. Selain itu, kepedulian Bill Gates untuk berbagi juga bisa dijadikan teladan bahwa sukses akan lebih berarti jika kita bisa saling berbagi.
